Upon his return from battle in the previous film, the great warrior Hercules learns that his lover, Daianara, has lost her senses. Acording of the oracle Medea, Dianara’s only hope is the Stone of Forgetfulness which lies deep in the realm of Hades. Hercules, with two companions, Theseus and Telemachus, embarks on a dangerous quest for the stone, while he is unaware that Dianara’s guardian, King Lico, is the one responsible for her condition and plots to have the girl for himself as his bride upon her revival.

Viewing Notes

Figures that Bava’s installment in the Reg Park Hercules series would be horror-themed. I’d really love to read how Bava was tasked with this project. Also this is an early look at Christopher Lee warming up for his role as Saruman.

While this isn’t a “great” movie it is certainly fun. One of the better films from this run of Hercules from Italy. I’ve only seen the cropped shitty transfer version on Amazon. I’d love to see a restored print of this. So many of Bava’s trademark colors are washed away. Occasionally there are glimpse of his brilliant color work but this transfer is too murky to appreciate his eye for framing shadows against those hues.
