Viewing Notes

I know this has a big following but I’m still amazed this received a wide release event in the US. It’s a limited window but playing in *big* theaters. This makes me very happy as it’s not often you can see something like this in a local multiplex. Japanese action horror based on a manga and subsequent TV show is a treat. I’m considering going to see it again tomorrow.

Without knowing anything about the story or mythology other than the main character design it was easy to get dropped into this world and follow what was happening. Basically monsters co-exist in secret with humans while a federal agency CCG tracks the “ghouls” to exterminate them.

The film does a good job compacting the main narrative of the manga into a 2 hour film. Of course there are unexplained things but it’s not hard to figure out what’s going on (for example the weapons used by the CCG appear to be organic devices taken from terminated Ghouls). I suppose having read the manga or seen the anime series would fill in the gaps but I went in cold and still enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Naturally it ends in a way to produce more installments.

Pretty rad to see this and Tokyo Vampire Hotel in the same week, both featuring a very familiar area of Shinjuku.

My only (small) gripe is a sequence where it is clearly morning or midday that quickly turns to late evening in a matter of minutes. Seemed like an unnecessary decision to have those final fights at night. Maybe due to the heavy CG used but one fight takes place indoors so it’s a bit strange.
