Viewing Notes

Last movie of the festival for me!

Clever screenplay that had me totally thinking it was going in one direction then goes in a different direction. For a manga adaptation the source material is compressed yet still works extremely well here. I’m guessing that each of these characters gets more time to develop in the books and it’s easy to see here as a few of the primaries only get a little screen time compared to the main characters.

Mikako Ichikawa portrays almost a throwaway character as she could’ve been completely written out of the movie and it would have no impact. Which is unfortunate because she’s awesome but given very little to do here. I think it was more about attempting to be faithful to the source material by having these six individuals part of the movie version. Regardless the movie as a whole works and it’s a wonderful film.

Also Fumino Kimura is great as are all the band scenes. I could watch them jamming for two hours. Love that she’s playing an SG and rocking the metal. Really cool this was programmed for the festival.
