Viewing Notes

Haven’t seen this in a long time… apparently not since it was released! I recall not being crazy about this movie then hence the reason I haven’t revisited. But this viewing (and the years in-between) really gave me a new appreciation for this film. Miyazaki’s love for nature and purity is central to this story and his hatred towards war are really emphasized throughout. More than the other Studio Ghibli films I’ve seen this year, this one really had me reminiscing about my visit to the Ghilbi Museum. I think it’s due to the moving castle and its interior design which is similar to the museum.

Very warm movie that affected me greatly. Glad I picked up the new GKids blu. Will definitely revisit once I get my new home theater set up.

An aside this was the second visit to a Regal Cinema that was marred by projection issues in as many days (COCO in RPX in ABQ being the other one). The aspect ratio was blown up to 2.35:1 from its regular 1.85:1 so it covered the entire screen (it’s the largest non-IMAX screen at this theater). By doing this the subtitles were cut off. It took several people to inform the staff yet they let the movie continue to run for 20 minutes before attempting to rewind the DCP. After all these (plus the two short films) it was 45 minutes past the original start time. I figure since it was a single showing they didn’t QC the projection for the feature. Caused some commotion but glad it got worked out and that film erased that soured beginning.
