Viewing Notes

This is a real oddity, a musical remake of silent film The Last Man on Earth (1924), which also screened at Chicago Film Society the previous week (sadly I missed it). Somewhat obscure film apparently unavailable on home video yet this was an excellent 35mm print on loan from MoMA.

Wild mash-up of comedy and science fiction with musical numbers thrown in about the last surviving man on the planet earth inhabited by only women. Not what anyone would classify as a good movie but certainly entertaining for its premise and a slice of its time. Very absurd yet somewhat refreshing (for a 1933 film) to see an entire cast of women, hundreds of women, to fill every role and a huge group of extras. Clearly pre-code with some of those costumes and attire besides all the sexual situations.

This is the kind of movie that makes CFS a real treasure. Not sure how I’d see this film otherwise.
