So happy Mubi added this! Another Sono that would be fun on the screen with the bold colors and what is basically performance art. This is like taking a Roman Porno and turning it inside out exposing the innards and skeleton of what goes into filming a pink film. Also feels more like a stage play (where the performance art is highlighted). It’s subversive yet I imagine even Sono fans wouldn’t easily embrace this meta movie.
Continue to be impressed by the bold performance of Ami Tomite. She is great in Vampire Hotel and great here as the central focus of this young woman yearning for a life in adult film, to oppose her strict yet sexually explicit parents in addition to the loss of her sister.
There’s a lot going on if one looks below the superficial surface. The lizard locked in a jar is the obvious symbolism. I’ll probably give this another spin before it leaves Mubi (it doesn’t get released until April 2018).
