Viewing Notes

Given all the recent acclaim for this film I finally was able to get to a theater screening it (was only in 5 area theaters and Regal Lincolnshire was the closest/easiest for me). I’ll say this: for about the first hour and half or so I was like, “yeah this is good but is it that good simply bc this gay relationship is the central story amidst the context of being Jewish and set in the early 80s?”

Like yes, this is a good movie and handles the material with a warm elegance and sensuality. Then it hits. And it hits with such a magnitude I had tears streaming down my face. I could barely keep my eyes open. The emotional spectrum of feelings that surfaced were almost too much to handle. This was something I was not prepared for nor was I expecting but during the moment I understood.

Now I’ve seen two excellent Timothée Chalamet films this year and two excellent Michael Stuhlbarg films this year. This trio of films could easily be my top 3 films of the year. In a perfect world both of these actors would be recognized come awards time. Also worth noting that Armie Hammer is typically great as well.
