Viewing Notes

Back when Johnnie To cut his teeth on action fantasy flicks. Released the same year as Heroic Trio and its sequel The Executioners, The Mad Monk features two of the Trio (Anita and Maggie) plus Stephen Chow in the titular role. If I hadn’t read the synopsis I’m not sure I would have extracted that exact plot. This movie is steeped in Chinese lore twisted for comedic beats. It comes together by the end with a fun battle with a giant demon god. All practical FX which is nice to see. Maggie Cheung is a delight.
