Thought this was Korean but it’s Japanese!
Dig this premise but waaaaaay too long to tell this kind of horror crime thriller.
There’s plenty to enjoy in Jôji Iida’s film adaptation of Another Heaven however the length isn’t one of them. Overly long at 132min, it’s understandable that he wanted to capture much from the book, which is also quite lengthy but the film would benefit from less flab and tighter storytelling. The two detectives are chasing a serial killer that creates such paranoia that the tension is lost whenever the film downshifts into exposition. The cat & mouse action provides enough steam to power the story beats; the relationships can be built along the way. Still effective for the creepiness and mystery that makes for good whodunit.
Worth noting that Miwako Ichikawa is great in her first film role.
