Yuan Shuai, a debt-ridden animal-breeder, tries to get out of his financial predicament by finding a wealthy girlfriend through matchmaking dates. He unexpectedly meets and fall in love with the fox demon, Bai Xianchu, who has arrived to the mortal realm to repay her gratitude. However, the head of the Demon tribe Yun Zhonghe forbids a love relationship between a demon and a human; and takes Bai Xianchu away. To seek his lover, Yuan Shuai bravely crashes the demonic world.

Viewing Notes
This movie really wants to be Stephen Chow’s THE MERMAID. Similar story beats. Doesn’t quite have the level of humor or social message, which frankly is okay bc The Mermaid really hits you over the head with that.
What this movie does do is provide a wonderful fantastical world of beast people that co-exists in the human world. The relationship between fox demon and mortal is charming. Most of the FX, both practical and CG, are decent. Overall this is a warm and engaging movie that I’m glad I made the trip to River East to see on the big screen.
