Viewing Notes

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years already. Crazy that this is the movie that kicked off the MCU. It holds up rather well but I wonder what would’ve happened if this had not performed well… and also to make the HULK the follow-up is also pretty crazy.

What’s neat in this is to see how Tony Stark once was before his capture and invention. I’m a little surprised that I haven’t viewed this since release (not once on home video) given how much I enjoyed this. The Obadiah Stane stuff is still clunky and ham-fisted. Everything up until that finale is pretty great but that battle is questionable. Stane gets in the Iron Monger suit for the first time and is a total expert in using it (this, after they show Stark repeatedly trying to use his suit and failing). It’s a very rushed ending to wrap things up neatly.

I always liked Terrence Howard but it’s weird seeing him now. Like he’s very out of place. The POW portion is still quite excellent as Stark builds his first suit. Overall very enjoyable flick to lay the foundation for the MCU. Wasn’t a huge fan of IM2 so that will be an interesting revisit.
