As an appropriation of Eastern iconography this is an interesting animated film. Based on a comic series, it’s cherrypicking a variety elements from literature, film and anime to construct its good vs evil narrative. People seem to to be more hung up on the animation style, that’s it more static than fluid, but that doesn’t bother me. In fact I like it. I have a bigger issue w/the ninja/samurai lore sci-fi’d up thru a Western lens. Like it’s totally fine to create and embellish these things but I find it odd that there was no attempt to cast *any* Asian voice actors when the majority of characters are defined as Asian. If it was a dub it would be one thing but this was wholly created in North America. If reading the comic you’d see these characters as Asian why not have that for the animation? Weird choice that almost makes me want to ask the creators about it.
