But as contemporaries Coppola, Scorsese and Spielberg rose to blockbuster stardom in the 1980s, Ashby’s uncompromising nature played out as a cautionary tale of art versus commerce.

Viewing Notes

Wonderful look at the life and films of Hal Ashby as told by his recordings, friends and family. Surprised I haven’t seen more of his films but this doc certainly has me wanting to do a Ashby project in the near future. Jeff Bridges has the best soundbites in this.
