Finally able to catch up with this movie which has generated rave reviews since Fantastic Fest where I didn’t feel that same kind of buzz. Oddly it seems like the horror elements were undersold bc this is a horror flick and p damn good one. The kids are excellent and really make this movie work. Can understand why del Toro thinks so highly of this one as it calls back to his The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth in significant ways. Somber and horrific yet inspiring as these kids make the best of the shitty situation they’re dealt.
