This movie kicked off Yuriko Hoshi week on DKU-TV (formerly TKU-TV). She passed away when they were on break (rebranding) so now they’re doing a tribute week of her films. I was happy they programmed this one bc it’s another who’s who of Toho Studios at the time (men, mostly) with Mifune as the reluctant hero. Of course this is also a film that hasn’t had a proper home video release outside the grey market.
Oddly enough Yuriko is barely seen in the film having smallish role despite being billed after Mifune and Kyoko Kagawa. Always great to see Hideyo Amamoto even in a bit part as the translator here. Given the pedigree of talent on hand (including an upbeat score by Akira Ifukube) this movie deserves to be restored and released.
