Finally crossing this blindspot off the list… and wow this really is a full blown porno flick sandwiched within a historical drama. Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell are easily the best things here… wonder if anyone ever asks them about this flick. It’s nuts and recalls a time when I used to see ads for it in Penthouse back in the day. The entire time I was wishing there was a documentary about this movie and how it came to be. There is a making-of doc on the DVD which I started watching but not the same thing.
If all the hardcore porn was removed, which I’m guessing were Penthouse Pets and pornstars just doing their thing and very graphic, this could’ve been a decent retelling of this story. McDowell is so good too. But there’s a lot of fat and of course porn that pads out the runtime to 2.5+ hours. Trim it down to 2 hours and it would be a stronger flick.
Fascinated regardless and rather unfortunate there’s not a better release out there. This is one of those early DVDs that just looks bad. But also on par w/grainy 70s porno flicks so I guess that’s something.
Worth noting that I waited a long time (months) to finally get this from the library network (Northbrook is the only library carrying it) and there’s no renewal available meaning it’s on others waitlists. I guess people love getting free porn from the library.
