Viewing Notes

Yay IMAX. boo these shitty seats and the asshole talking behind me. (I moved to another seat 3 rows in front of my assigned seat, which helped)

Honestly, genuinely surprised at how great this movie is. Probably has to do w/the marketing, which didn’t do anything for me, the premise (very tired of zombie-anything), and the seemingly lukewarm reaction out of Fantastic Fest (to be fair, most said it was good but don’t recall anyone super praising it). So that’s a recipe for a movie that I’m less enthralled to see.

Maybe it was because of that that this movie worked its magic on me. Seeing it in IMAX was a good idea. I had planned to go to Muvico for a standard digital preso but somewhere I saw the title w/IMAX attached so I checked if any of my nearby theaters were doing IMAX and sure enough I found one (AMC Village Crossing in Skokie, an IMAX I haven’t experienced yet). By noon I was just thinking of doing Muvico bc fuck it, it’s closer but I still had to get my bedroom sorted and go to Home Depot for paint supplies. So I did that and stuck w/my original plan to go to Skokie.

Really glad I did. Seeing that opening sequence on that giant screen w/the sound system shaking the theater was such a cinematic joy. Then when they reach the town all the character moments are great. I didn’t care much for the re-animation / zombie stuff but I was happy that it was just another story beat and not *the* story.

Was impressed by the entire cast. I like Wyatt channeling his dad in THE THING. Perhaps most impressed by Mathilde Ollivier; she perfectly encapsulates that role of the terrorized villager we’ve seen in these war movies but also wants to be more than play a victim. I chuckled when she joins the team for the final mission because of course.

I don’t often say this but I wish they had set up a sequel that finds these soldiers encountering another nazi experiment during their reassignment to C-company. And Chloe is with them, of course. Anyways, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit and maybe it finds a spot in my top 25.
