Tackling this so I can return the DVD set tomorrow.
Worth noting that I believe these serial murder mystery flicks (Charlie Chan, Dr. Wong, etc.) that were produced in the 1930s into the 1940s were the natural precursor to film noir, a la proto-noir. Haven’t read anything on this but it seems like the filmmakers watched these simple stories then amped the suspense, removed the humor aspects and introduced angular camera techniques and contrasts (German Impressionism) for more involved stories often with romantic elements that these serial stories don’t have.
Anyways just an observation from watch several film noir films for Noirvember then sliding in a few of these serial films into my viewing.
