Finally. Echo the prevailing sentiment I’ve seen in my TL: very good boxing movie and sequel but not even close to matching the level of the previous film. Which is totally fine. I still cried.
Oddly this looks like a made for TV movie compared to the first movie. Just in the way it’s shot, the photography and framing. Not a knock on this movie but it just looks average. Also goes to show how excellent the photography and framing is in the first movie. Maybe C2 would feel like a better movie if that first one wasn’t so damn great.
There are a few great shots in this film (clearly the one w/Stallone sitting outside the ring in the finale will be memorable) but even the boxing isn’t all that great. It’s a testament to the power of the story itself that elevates this movie. I’m invested in these characters and have nostalgia for Rocky/Drago. Gotta say that there’s an appearance by one character that literally blew me away. After that I almost expected to see the ghost of Apollo appear.
I do hope that the book is closed on this franchise.
