Viewing Notes

Meant to watch this leading up to NYE but couldn’t get it from my library. Really dig this movie. I like it more each time I see it. Someday I’ll pick up the 4K UHD. This blu looks nice but I bet that 4K will be really nice.

Notes on this viewing: this movie was intentionally meant to be a science fiction western as opposed to the original SW which was an accidental western. Interesting approach for this film but it makes sense (train robbery, showdown, etc.)

I still strongly believe Enfys Nest was meant to be the daughter of Beckett and Val. Not sure why they would’ve changed it but I believe it would’ve had a better emotional punch at the end. That train sequence is still the best setpiece of the film. Also sad they remove two major characters during that. Would’ve liked to see Val and Rio around longer and interact w/Han + Chewie. This is a really great role for Woody Harrelson; he’s plays it so well and so perfect.

I’m still not crazy about Alden as Han but all the dialogue and snarky beats are definitely Han and I can imagine Harrison Ford saying all those lines. I love love love Chewbacca; he makes me laugh so much in his reactions. Still astonished how much Glover nails Lando especially with his voice inflection and delivery. L3-37 is a character I like less w/each viewing. Feels like a forced comic relief character. I’m okay with Maul appearing but holy shit that light saber moment is so fucking stupid. So unnecessary and goofy. I still want a sequel to this with Qi’ra story plus more Enfys Nest (bc she’s literally the best thing in this movie). At this point I’d be fine w/seeing Han working w/Jabba the Hutt.

Watched the Q&A roundtable in the extras. GD is Thandie so fucking beautiful. Interesting that they recorded this after the movie was released but cool to hear their thoughts on making the film w/Ron Howard. Watching the BTS stuff too. Neat to see the on location filming when they could’ve done green (blue) screen. The making of the train heist sequence is impressive. I love the snowtroopers with magnetic boots.
