It’s fine. Not a horror movie (and I’m usually one to lean towards horror on these things but it’s not horror unlike SAW or CUBE, which it does relate to those tangentially but never goes as far as either of those). It’s a full on thriller and mostly works but also kinda dumb when you can see easier ways for them to solve the puzzle.
For example in the first setpiece you’d think they could use something else to provide weight on the glasses rather than water. There is one setpiece, the bar/tavern, which really got me with some genuine thrills. Definitely the best sequence. The biggest problem with this is not giving me any reason to care about any of these characters. And the epilogue is so dumb.
I appreciate it being set in Chicago but it’s obvious they only used establishing shots as most of the movie was done elsewhere including the building they enter (apparently South Africa). Would’ve been cool if they just did the whole thing in Chicago.
Give this a modest 6/10 for that really good bar sequence and having at least one lead that I enjoyed. Also it kept me awake.
