This is 4 hours long. Epic and a masterpiece of filmmaking. Certainly one of the best examples of Taiwan New Cinema. Can’t imagine watching this in theaters but it would be amazing. Pretty wild to watch this after The Soong Sisters (basically the timeline of this film takes off not long after the core story of The Soong Sisters ends - about a decade later). Also interesting that Elaine Jin portrays the mother in both films!
I might create a list of Taiwan New Cinema films to track them. This has been a wonderful discovery this year.
