Wasn’t expecting to watch another Kiyoshi Kurosawa this week (and didn’t even know this was his film until his name appeared in the opening credits). This was featured on MUBI for their “Love and Death in Japan” special and I liked the premise. Oh, I also didn’t know Asano Tadanobu was in this as well until he shows up in the beginning of the movie! Hell I would’ve probably fired this up sooner if I had known.
This is a really sweet supernatural story about love and loss, regret and redemption wrapped in romantic road trip tale of two people discovering each other again. Beautiful movie and wonderful performances and photography. One thing I really enjoy about Japanese dramas (and contemporary Japanese film, in general) is viewing everyday life whether in the city or rural areas, the shops and restaurants and streets and homes. It reminds me of my own trips and just wandering various areas and neighborhoods.
There are a few more themed Japanese films on MUBI this month that I’m looking forward to viewing.
