Viewing Notes

When I saw this film going around (it’s scheduled to screen at the Music Box next week) I thought it was a newly discovered / restored Ozu film. Perhaps it has been restored? But I soon learned it was released by Criterion a few years ago in an Eclipse set (and it’s one I don’t own), an Ozu crime drama set. I saved it for last in my viewing all three films this week. Definitely the best of the three with more polished filming techniques and style although it still incorporates much of what we saw in the other films (the nod to Americana and cinema).

The story is also just as Capri-esque as the others with the criminals ultimately wanting to turn over a new leaf. Why this one stands out more than the others is the focus on the women, particularly Tokiko and her relationship with Joji. There’s a great scene between Tokiko and Kazuko, another woman whom Tokiko is jealous.

This boils down to a “one last job” joint that careens into “let’s give up and start over” that makes for nice closure. It’s interesting to see that Ozu was so enamored with America and Hollywood early in his career. All of that is abandoned as he became more seasoned and created his own style.

Since this is going around the art house circuit I wonder if there’s gonna be a new release. I’d consider getting it.
