Viewing Notes

Ah the movie where I first fell in love with Naomi Watts as Jet Girl. Of course when I saw this in theater back in ‘95, she was just a no-name and I probably didn’t see her again until Mulholland Drive. Anyways, I loved this movie when it was released and I still adore it now. Such a crazy product for its time given the production (female director and female protagonist). Sure, it’s goofy and wildly charming and really like a live action comic book.

The Shout! Factory blu has a nice presentation. I also watched the interviews w/director Rachel Talalay, Lori Petty, and production designer Catherine Hardwicke (didn’t realize that Hardwicke was involved with this but it was nice story how she pitched herself). The interview w/Talalay is really cool b/c she actively sought the option to make this but really didn’t have a chance but the Tank Girl creators liked her so they selected her. Then came the struggles of making the movie and pitching to the studios. Fascinating stuff. She also confirms what I suspected; the studio took the film from her in post to edit it against her wishes. So the finally product isn’t the movie she initially planned to make.

I love her attitude. She knew she was making a movie that either people would love or hate. She didn’t want to make a movie that was in the middle (which I think the studio wanted and released).

I had forgotten about some of the sequences including the amazing setpiece at Liquid Silver where Iggy Pop shows up! Great to revisit this and wouldn’t mind owning this someday.
