Admittedly this is not a very good movie but I love the heart and that Tsuburaya wanted to make a kaiju film 100 percent aimed towards children. Directed by director of Ultraman and Ultra Q, this is the tale of Daigoro, whom all the children love but is costing the local municipal government a lot of money to feed. Yet Daigoro keeps growing so the officials decide to ration his food, which is awful and the kids are unhappy and campaign to generate funds for food.
Meanwhile, a new kaiju shows up and Daigoro battles that kaiju (Goliath) but is too weak bc he’s not fed well. And you can guess the rest of this story.
There’s not a lot of meat on the bones but I like the charm and characters all pulling for Daigoro, who is a pretty dopey looking kaiju. Probably thought he was cute at the time.
Anyways, I only just discovered this movie in the past week and I’m amazed that I went this long without knowing about given all the kaiju information I ingest between books, mags, online and podcasts. Why hasn’t any of the podcasts I listen to covered this?
The transfer on Archive isn’t great. I started watching on my HDTV and looked rather pathetic. So after 20 minutes I switched to my iPad. That was better. Wouldn’t mind owning a nice restored version. Would be a nice intro to kaiju for the young ones.
