Viewing Notes

Happy I can see this in theater… and for six bucks!

Five segments framed by another segment “The Projectionist” set in an old movie theater, Rialto Theater. The first segment by Alejandro Brugués is a really fun spin on the slasher subgenre. Love that one. The next segment by Joe Dante is a reimagining of a famous Twilight Zone episode and this one is good. Third segment, my favorite, by Ryûhei Kitamura is demonic possession story (set in the same church as THE FOG) which usually isn’t my fave subgenres but it’s done so well and the music… the music is a throwback to 70s/early 80s Italo-horror (think Fulci et al.) that I was in love as soon as I heard it.

The 4th segment is by David Slade and it’s so out there with the weird horror sci-fi that I really dug it. The fifth segment “DEAD” by Mick Garris is the weakest of the bunch. It’s fine but also kinda uninteresting w/another “we see dead people” motif. The wrap-around w/Mickey Rourke is fine and serves its purpose (also directed by Garris).

Overall a solid horror anthology and one I’d watch again (in fact it’s already on Hoopla!).
