Overview

There is an ancient ritual known to humankind for more than a hundred years…According to the legend, an ominous entity known as The Queen of Spades can be summoned by drawing a door and staircase on a mirror in the darkness, and by saying her name three times. The Queen of Spades gets her energy from reflective objects; she cuts locks of hair from those asleep, and those that see her go mad or die. Four teenagers decide to call The Queen of Spades as a joke. But when one of them dies of a sudden heart attack, the group realizes they are up against something inexplicable and deadly dangerous.

Viewing Notes

Another film that was expiring on Shudder. Another supernatural flick (following my watch of THE HAUNTED). This one is demonic possession a la Russian Exorcist flick. tbh not a subgenre that I’m fond of but I watch ‘em nevertheless. This one takes an old Russian folktale about a witch that lives in a mirror and can be be called by repeating “Queen of Spades” 3x (yeah that sorry trope). This legend is partially pulled from a fictional story written in the early 19th century but this rendition really deviates to be more Exorcist.

Wasn’t crazy about that and another child gets possessed story but it’s fine just not all that interesting by the end and not when you’ve seen dozens of other very similar stories. I’d really like to see the movie based off the original story and I believe there are a few to track down.

Oh also it was hard to believe that Evgeniya Loza, who is the mom, could really be the mother of this girl. Sure sure she could have the girl when she was a teen or maybe early 20s but she just looks so young to be believable.
