Viewing Notes

Leaving theaters today! I suppose when you run out of ideas you just remake one of your older films. In this remake of La Femme Nikita, the main Russian KGB agents are portrayed by Brits (Luke Evans & Helen Mirren) and the main CIA agent is an Irishman (Cillian Murphy). A little weird to hear everyone speaking a different accent in English… and why would Russians speak English to each in private?

Anyways, Luc Besson keeps making these misogynistic, exploitative films disguised as “girl power” messages and this is one is mostly okay. Not nearly as ambitious as LUCY (or Valerian for that matter) but then again he’s retelling an old story we’ve seen remade several times since (most recently RED SPARROW). ANNA is better than middle of the pack but since we’ve seen it before we already know not all is as it seems. I’d watch again.

Hope Sasha Luss gets a better gig in the future that was less leering and male gaze-y. Just let her be a badass.

UPDATE: After mulling this over some more I think Besson actually uses the same story beats from La Femme Nikita that setup the entire film (how Anna is “discovered” to sending her on her first mission with a handicap). Haven’t seen La Femme Nikita in years so now I want to revisit that.
