Viewing Notes

Haida film expiring today. Appreciate the craft but not totally on board with the story and the Haida native language. Firstly, the photography is excellent. This is def not the kind of film you see very often (native Canadians surviving in the 19th century). The choice to use Haida is intriguing but often it feels like these were actors that learned the language phonetically and were simply repeating it for the scenes, i.e. it doesn’t always feel natural. But damn what an ambitious way to go for this.

The story should’ve been a real gut punch yet isn’t conveyed in a way to really drive that home. Like no big peaks or valleys. The language may have been a barrier here, as well. still worth a look for doing something very different.
