So here’s my prediction: Taron Egerton won’t be nominated for Best Actor despite absolutely owning this role and actually doing all the singing/performances (unlike Rami Malek). And that will royally suck. And holy shit Jamie Bell deserves a Best Supporting nod. He’s so good I didn’t even know that was him.
Admittedly I was reluctant to see this simply b/c I’m not big on biopics esp. biopics at the theater. They always feel like a “watch at home” occasion. But having seen everything else at the theater and having an AList to burn (and not wanting to use it on LION KING tomorrow) I went to ROCKETMAN.
Movie definitely won me over, much of it the music and performances. It really is astounding how fucking talented Elton John + Bernie Taupin are. Altho I don’t really listen to Elton (and haven’t since I was a kid) these songs/performances brought a big smile to face. Can you imagine being one of the hippies at the Troubadour for Elton’s very first show in America?
Only thing I wish they had done: put dates up on the screen to follow the timeline of events. I believe the reason they didn’t was because they are playing a bit loose w/some of the events and didn’t want any asshats calling them out on the timeline.
