So when I last saw this it was a save from TCM since it wasn’t available on DVD. Now this DVD set I got from the Park Ridge library was released in 2004 so it did exist on DVD but was perhaps OOP.* Glad to view it again since I really enjoyed that first viewing.
This is in the same set as Queen of Spades which I viewed early this morning and didn’t engage with. This DVD suffers from the same issues: poor PQ and audio mix. I have to crank up the receiver and still it’s not entirely clear what dialogue I’m hearing. Again, I wish this had subtitles.
Wonder if this has gotten a better release since b/c I know it’s a highly lauded film. Somewhat anyways.
Not quite as great as I remember which could be more to do with fighting w/the low quality transfer and crummy audio. Also amusing for what was considered “horror” back in the 40s, which I’m sure was still scary then but now it’s just oh yeah that’s an evil mirror. Or kick that ventriloquist dummy to the curb.
*discovered literally the next day that Kino Lorber released this recently on Blu-ray! Man, I’d love to see that. This dvd was the pits.
