Mr. Smith Goes to Tokyo (2009)

Directed by Iain Overton

Documentary

Overview

When Tomoko finds some messages for a ‘Mr Smith’ on a lost mobile phone, she finds herself on an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ journey through Tokyo’s boulevards and back alleys. From the tyranny of symmetry in soaring office blocks - to buildings that look like space-ships, this creative documentary shows us the city’s soul.

Viewing Notes

Unique way to deliver a city guide. I dug it. Most enjoyment came from recognizing places I’ve been and seeing buildings / places I’d like to visit on a future trip. I’m very familiar with the Kabukichou area of Shinjuku (red light district) so all that was fun to see. Guessing this was shot in October. Overall this is pretty neat to see many sites around the city. Oddly has almost 10 minutes of black screen to end the doc so it’s more like 50 minutes.
