So this is just an hour long promo for Netflix produced content? Seriously. Why didn’t they just title this “ENTER THE NETFLIX ANIME”. It’s literally a 58 minute commercial for Netflix anime shows. No wonder it’s gotten such lousy reviews and has a 2.7 rating on IMDb. I had heard this wasn’t good and only checked one review before adding to my queue.
So if you go into this with that lens (this is a Netflix promotion) this is perfectly fine. Except…. WhyTF did they hire a person who has zero knowledge and zero interest in the subject matter. Mindblowing. Disappointing. Having this woman continue on about how she has no idea what this anime thing is and continue on throughout “I’m even more confused now… hey let’s look at food and these vending machines!”
What a fucking joke. Like WTF was Netflix doing here. It’s offensive how bad this woman is by inserting herself into the narrative. Had she just directed and kept herself out of it, this would’ve been a lot better. So yeah I get the hatred towards the doc (besides it just being a commercial).
And I totally dig all the interviews. Do I want to hear Shinji Aramaki talk about making the new Ultraman series? Fuck yes. Do I want to hear Alex Burunova talk about how wacky Japan is… NO. I don’t. I’d really like to know the decision behind hiring her to do this movie.
