Viewing Notes

Hope it’s a monster movie. Okay, it sorta kinda is?

So on seeing the trailer this looked like a FF flick. Now having viewed it still could be but maybe not b/c it just lacks some teeth. Sure, it could play FF but it’s not quite all there in the execution. Still very neat to see a Korean horror flick in my local AMC (we don’t get those very often; thinking that The Wailing was probably the last one). Guessing one reason it got a theatrical release here is because it leans into Christianity due to the whole Vatican + exorcism storyline.

Regarding the premise, I dig it. A MMA fighter teams up with priest to save those possessed and ultimately fight the devil. Has some decent FX and wild to see an action supernatural flick even if I didn’t buy those scenes (a good MMA fighter wouldn’t resort to punching and kicking but more grappling and jiujitsu). I do like the relationship between MMA fighter and priest, the best/strongest aspect of the film.

Where this movie goes wrong is in the tired tropes of the “evil night club” roost for the devil’s minions. The ongoing questioning of faith. The usual stuff always seen in exorcism flicks. It’s all done well but just not all that original. I was mostly wishing this was a pilot for a K-drama series where the MMA fighter and priest travel to world to hunt demons. That would be a fun tv show. However, it does weirdly set up a sequel film in a shoehorned sequence during the credits.

I probably wouldn’t watch this again but I would watch a TV show. Still worth the viewing to see it once and watch demon possessed lackeys get beatdowns.
