Viewing Notes

Crazy this got an IMAX release here. At least there’s a lot of people here for this screening.

Took a bit to warm up to this but by the third act I was totally into this story and the conflict. It’s like Dreamworks animated PROBLEM CHILD steeped in Chinese folklore. The humor was fine (my mostly Chinese audience LOVED it) yet it was the relationships that worked the best.

A magical pearl is split into halves, light and dark, and the wrong half (the Demon Pill) gets placed into the newborn of the village ruler while the good half gets placed into a dragon egg. The result is that the ruling couple gets a “problem child” that the villagers hate while the dragon gets an honorable child.

The main gist of the story is overcoming destiny to be a better person… defying fate for the love of family and friendship. Good story and fun movie to see with a decent crowd. First time I’ve seen the movie actually alert the audience of the upcoming post-credits scenes (there’s two at the end of this movie).

Maybe due to Labor Day weekend we were able to get this movie in select IMAX screens. Can’t imagine how else this would’ve gotten into theaters but I’m glad. More pleased that people came out to see it. I honestly expected it to be an near empty theater but we had a decent turnout. Hoping this bodes well for future releases like this.
