Viewing Notes

This is a fucked up movie. Everyone in this town should be put in jail. Marlon Brando is quite good as the small town sheriff caught between upper class that run the town and the mob justice out for blood. It’s impressive that Robert Redford’s hair always looks perfect (gd, he’s a handsome man) despite being on the run for the entire duration of the film.

This is another film programmed by QT for New Bev July. The primary reason, IIRC, was b/c Jane Fonda is one of the stars, an “it girl” at the time, parallel to Sharon Tate and this being one the films that put her on the rise. But holy shit this cast is stacked… like a who’s who of character actors and pre-big stars like Bobby Duvall and Angie Dickinson. Fonda is a standout but there’s so much going on in this small town between all the awful white people and celebrating each others’ wealth while the sheriff tries to keep the peace. The escaped prisoner (Redford) is really the lightning rod that brings it all to a head. What a film.
