Viewing Notes

Second half of the horror double feature on DaikaijuTV for Friday the 13th. Hadn’t seen this one so I def was excited to check it out. Neat concept albeit a bit confusing. The description via TMDb isn’t completely accurate. A group of teens find themselves in an abandoned building altho I’m not sure why they go there and it turns out to be the same building that one of the teens developed for a computer escape room game.

That’s the core story but there’s more going on than meets the eye and that’s where it gets confusing. This confusion wasn’t helped by the jankey subtitles which often were literal translations of the dialogue rather than the meaning, which is common for Japanese. One simple example would be where a character says “urusai!” to another character. うるさい literally translates as “Loud” or “Noisy” but it is commonly used in colloquial speaking as “Shut up!”

So the subs were done by someone (or perhaps a machine learning tool) w/o understanding of the language use. So it was not the easiest to follow but I got the main gist of the dialogue. That said, I’m still not entirely certain of a few of main reveal beats towards the end. Regardless, this is a decent flick that I’d love to see a better version (subs) and the sequel.
