Still had this blu from the library but didn’t have time to view before FF so I fired it up tonight. Main reason I got this was b/c somewhere in a trailer or something I saw that Anya Taylor-Joy was in this. After getting the movie I noticed that this was directed by the writer for THE ORPHANAGE. So I was looking forward to this.
It’s very similar in setting the table and slowly removing all the pieces then pulling the table cloth for a backwards magic trick. It’s not entirely successful here and after viewing the deleted/extended scenes it’s clear they cut them as to not provide clues to the real story. The movie is still engaging and Anya Taylor-Joy is luminous. Sergio the director also notes this in the BTS featurette (the reason she was cast). She’s really good and has a certain vibe that works in these fantastical pictures. I really dig her.
I also love the locations, which were supposed to be either coastal northeast or northwest but shot in Spain. Not sure what Bayona did for the film but he talks a lot during the featurette and suggests that Anya is very much like the late 80s / early 90s Winona Ryder.
