Viewing Notes

After viewing MEGAMIND and noting that Brad Pitt rarely does voice work, I discovered that he did voice work for this movie. In fact he’s the primary voice actor for Sinbad. Having not seen it I wanted to check it out. I barely remember when this movie was released but I’m not surprised it wasn’t successful. “Sinbad” sadly is not a popular adventure property compared to say Tarzan. I don’t think many folks were rushing out to catch this in theater.

That said, this is a pretty good family flick mainly for the action beats and the voice casting. The screenplay is a bit of drag where the dialogue is concerned. And Sinbad is a full-on male chauvinist pig (but of course through this journey he sees the error in his ways to become a better man).

The animation is also quite bizarre b/c they combine what looks like traditional cel animation (even tho all it was done on computers) with more detailed CGI for a rather jarring experience. This is seen with the Kraken battle in the first action sequence. Not sure why they did it this way but it’s weird to see two distinct styles in the frame. Like think of any animated flick like Aladdin or Tarzan with more photo-realistic creatures in the same sequence. Just doesn’t look good.

Having Pitt plus Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer definitely helps. tbh it was more fun to watch these actors perform the dialogue in the “making of” featurette than watching the movie. I’d love to see the entire film with just them in the studio reading the lines. They are more entertaining to watch. Apparently this is Pitt’s first voice work for an animated feature and he enjoyed the experience (from what he says in the interviews).

Even tho the movie isn’t great I like it and would show this to my kids over most of the fare available to children. The DVD PQ isn’t very good but I wouldn’t mind owning a Blu if it had a better presentation. There’s enough here to enjoy and I dig the Sinbad tales.

Holy crap. Looking over CZJ films she just up and retired from making films six years ago? I guess she’s gotten in TV but just weird not to see any feature film work.
