Viewing Notes

Surprised I have only logged this film twice before this viewing. Thought I had for sure seen this 3 or 4 times like the other Honda films. Really odd given that I met Tomoko Ai at G-Fest and surely would’ve viewed this around that time. Need to look up the year that was bc they usually would screen the movie that featured the guests.

So I checked and it was G-Fest 2014 when Tomoko Ai was a guest and that’s the year I did the 60th Anniversary Godzilla marathon viewing of all the movies. I viewed this movie a couple months before G-Fest so it was fresh in my memory at that time when I met Tomoko. G-Fest did not screen the movie likely due to Toho restrictions on Showa era films at the time. Therefore it’s possible that really was the last time I viewed this film according to my log here. Makes sense but just doesn’t feel like it was 5 years since I’ve seen this.

This, the last of the Showa films, is probably the most like a Greek Tragedy of all those films. The loss of Mafune’s daughter only to be rebuilt by the aliens into this sad machine forced to control Titansaurus. Then to be under the thumb of the aliens and ultimately sacrifice herself after rediscovering her humanity and finally be loved again. Very emotional scene at the end.

Honda took a lot a flack for this movie but outside of the original Godzilla film, this is probably the most emotion heavy of his run and a fine way to conclude the era.
