Viewing Notes

Clue for movie 7: Surreal early 1960s regional horror (with a brand new score)

My guess: The Dead One (1961), which was way off. This movie, House of Dreams, wasn’t even one of my potential choices. A real unknown for me.

My least favorite of the lineup. I think this is moreso due to its placement in the lineup in the 9:10pm slot. This is a very sleepy, sedate mystery flick where a writer has nightmares of this old house and when he wakes another person in his circle of friends has died. Not sure I’d call this horror but I’m sure one could make the argument. It’s more unexplained mystery that’s never explained in the movie. I felt really bad for this guy’s wife.

Very much an oddity that I’m glad to have seen but not one I’d revisit of all the films seen at the marathon. Maybe the most interesting fact is that the original score made the film nearly unwatchable so Jason Coffman created a new audio track that removed the cacophonous piano music.
