Viewing Notes

Welp. I enjoyed this way more than expected. Possibly due to the low rankings and less than positive WOM that I had very low expectations going into it. Plus the Dolby Vision + Atmos was really good and immersive. Viewed MIDWAY (1976) a few years ago and wasn’t super keen on it so maybe that’s another factor? The original is a good film but didn’t come together for me. I think the energy and editing in this new film worked better for me. I’m probably an easy mark for Emmerich flicks even tho I don’t like all his work. I like the action and how the battles were presented. Having seen a few (ok two) Japanese films on this exact same battle where Toshiro Mifune is Admiral Yamamoto last year it was neat to see this story from the US side as well as some of the Japanese strategy as well.

What was amusing is there is a stretch where they role out another classic actor to portray one of the big stars of this battle. First it’s Dennis Quaid. Then 10 minutes later Woody Harrelson appears. When Aaron Eckhart shows up I laughed. I was hoping for more of these actors to just appear in a small role throughout the movie.

I did like the trio of Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano and Jun Kunimura as the three main Japanese Admirals. A lot of their side of the story mimicked the Japanese films but to a lesser degree. Basically Yamamoto’s conflict yet still at service to his country. Nagumo making a grave error with the outfitting his fighters incorrectly for battle and Yamaguchi going down with his ship. All handled well here yet also makes me want to revisit those Japanese films again.

Those films are: Admiral Yamamoto (1968) and Storm Over the Pacific (1960)
