Viewing Notes

Very pleased to find another unseen Johnnie To flick on Prime. This almost qualifies for batshit status bc it’s so fucking out there. This is the story of two men tied up with The Triads where there’s no real good outcome because The Triads. Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is the corrupt cop that works as a fixer for The Triads. Lau Ching-Wan is the hitman hired by The Triads tasked with tying up some loose ends. These two cross paths and find themselves in the shit.

There’s also a really weird character portrayed by Maggie Shiu that’s a total wild card in all of this. This is one of those cautionary tales: don’t get involved with organized crime!

So the transfer on Prime isn’t bad. Not great but definitely had me wanting a proper release w/clean subtitles. The subtitles are the CC option and timed poorly/not accurate. They’re functional and the movie isn’t hard to follow. Just rather sad that most of Johnnie To’s catalog doesn’t have a proper HD release. I’d love to own a good release of this movie (along with many others by To; also made me want to do another Johnnie To Winter and revisit many of his films).
