Viewing Notes

This is a wild post-apocalyptic thriller that mashes up a little of LOST with that Mexican film from a few years ago (that was also a homage to LOST) and Battle Royale / Maze Runner plus Murder on the Orient Express. The setup is nifty and had me invested. Plus this is a really good mixed cast of young and old stars including Lam Suet, Simon Yam, Kara Hui, Wong Yau-Nam, and Janice Man.

Where it loses me is in the third act. It’s almost like Fruit Chan devised this crazy premise about these remaining survivors in a deserted Hong Kong with no real ending in mind. He evokes several commentaries on humanity and society with this group of strangers forced to survive in an unknown circumstance yet there’s no payoff. Unless the intent was to leave the viewer wonder what we just saw.

That said I do like this vision of what a completely deserted HK would look like. It’s quite a stunning scene to see the city devoid of any life or moving vehicles. This is worth seeing for that and the neat setup in addition to this cast. When I requested this I had no idea what it was about or who was in it so overall it was an enjoyable watch. Just wish it had a more satisfying end.
