Only discovered that this was showing in my local theater and what appears to be a very limited engagement of 4 days total since today is the last day it’s showing yet it opened on Friday?! I didn’t even know there was a sequel for this but I really dug the first film so def want to see this.
Sequel in name only. This is an all new story about a kid who’s good at Go is taken in and mentored to become a superior Go player so they hustle other Go players. Then the kid grows up to be Kwon Sang-woo who is super muscle-y and now a hand-to-hand combat expert. He has a grand plan to enact revenge on those that wronged him when he was a kid.
This movie is perfectly fine. It lacks the thrills of the first movie that really made the game of Go entrancing and exciting. This movie the game could be Chess or whatever. Sure, there’s a little bit to the gameplay but more about the long play revenge plot. It hits beat by beat as you expect it to with so little stakes. My investment was how well the movie is shot and looks. Some of the fighting is neat but hyper-edited.
Probably more a 6 star movie but I like stoic Kwon Sang-woo beating up dudes and getting his revenge.
