Happy this behind-the-scenes / making-of documentary is included w/on the blu. I believe this also screened w/the 3 FROM HELL movie on certain nights during its limited run (other nights did double features w/The Devil’s Rejects). Didn’t realize this was an entire film itself but it’s really cool. Much like 31 when I saw that in theater there was a BTS/Making-of featurette that followed the screening that I enjoyed more than the movie. Same goes for this.
This is a great look at film production from beginning to end throughout the entire process. Love hearing from the actors as they discuss various sequences as well as seeing Robert provide the direction. Sid Haig passed away not long ago but according to this doc he was supposed to have a bigger role (he’s one of the Rejects!) but Zombie says that he physically couldn’t do it. So he reduced his role and Haig still couldn’t do it. So it was reduced even more to what he have in the finished movie. So apparently Haig was already in poor health last year. Sad that this is his last performance but also rather appropriate given how much he meant to the story. I’ll never forget meeting him at Wizard World only a year or two removed from House of a 1000 Corpses.
Another interesting bit is that Danny Trejo was meant to have a bigger role but I guess that was changed at some point b/c this BTS doc shows him getting fitted and shooting other scenes not in the film. I think that was a good choice given where the movie goes in the end.
I really do enjoy watching Robert work and wish he would direct a project that was written by someone else. Would love to see his eye and cinema aesthetic on a better screenplay.
Dee Wallace: “I enjoy making horror films the most but watch them the least because I’m a wussy.”
