Santa Company (2014)

Directed by Kenji Itoso

Fantasy | Animation | Holiday

Overview

Noel is an 11-year-old girl who despises Christmas. She has lived with her father ever since her parents divorced three years ago, but her father ends up busy at work every Christmas and she cannot play with her friends from school.  On a lonely Christmas Eve, Noel takes her usual apartment complex elevator ride to her home, but when the doors open, she finds herself lost in a humongous factory—owned by Santa Claus. Santa Claus has gone corporate as Santa Company with the motto “Swiftly, surely, secretly.” The outfit takes orders and delivers top-notch presents to children in the utmost secrecy. Noel meets some new friends, and together, they take off in a sled to deliver presents.

Viewing Notes

This 30 minute short was programmed for DKUTV’s “Christmas in Japan” week. The description via TMDb is a lot more than what this is really about (guessing it was taken from manga about the story). A better description would be that there’s a company at the North Pole that provides all the Santa’s with the presents to deliver on Christmas Eve. The children are the “elves” and graduate to higher levels as they get more experience; some even become a Santa. Noel is one of the children and her dad is the manager of the company. When a “letter to Santa” arrives too late she and her buddies decide they want to get the present delivered so the child won’t have a sad Christmas.

Has a nice message and some fantastical ideas on the mythology of Santa (using multiple Santas, having “prisna” to allow them to see in the dark, etc.). It’s fine. Discovered they released a feature film this year based on this story. Maybe the full-length film incorporates more of that description and source material from the manga.
