Overview

Salesman Roy Knable spends all his free time watching television, to the exasperation of his wife, Helen. One day, TV salesman Spike convinces Roy to buy a satellite dish offering 666 channels. The new addition to Roy’s home entertainment system sucks him and Helen into Hellvision, a realm run by Spike, who is an emissary of Satan. Viewing Notes

A science fiction comedy thriller? What. How have I not seen this?! Pam Dawber is one of the leads and she looks the same as she did 10 years prior when Mork and Mindy was on the air (1982). John Ritter is a comedic treasure. Even though is a purely fantastical story about “Hellvision” capturing souls to suck them into their satanic tv universe, it’s also a not so subtle condemnation of couch potatoes that watch television all day. Feels prescient as you could remake this now and replace TV with social media.

There’s a spoof on Godzilla which would make a great trivia question.  Also spoofs horror movies like Rosemary’s Baby and Silence of the Lambs. There’s a Tom & Jerry riff actually done by Chuck Jones which is great. That segment alone makes this worth viewing.

The Wayne’s World bit “Duane’s Underworld” is nuts. So many early 1990s pop culture touchstones including a Salt-N-Pepa video?! I can’t believe Peter Hyams directed this. I’m surprised that this hasn’t be rediscovered by 90s kids and talked about more.

The Three’s Company gag is hilarious. Curious how this played to audiences at the time.
