Glad they expanded this weekend to include a theater that’s easier to get to than River East.
Giving this a solid 7 for Donnie Yen still giving it his all. He might be retiring from action films but he can still nail those forms like no one’s business. That said, this really cranks up the xenophobia and racism towards Chinese immigrants in America w/over the top characters like Adkins portrayal which is borderline cartoonish. This is a paint by the numbers screenplay where it plays out exactly like you think it will as soon as Ip Man arrives in San Francisco.
Oddly the entire movie is filmed on-set in such a way that it all appears so artificial like an elaborate stage play. Very reminiscent of that spin-off Ip Man film from last year, Master Z. Wouldn’t be surprised if that set was redecorated for the Chinatown in this movie.
I do like Bruce Lee in this movie and wish he had been utilized more. Also Lo Meng is featured in the movie but not listed on IMDb (actually most of the kung fu masters from Chinatown seem to be missing on IMDb).
While not a great Ip Man movie it’s still a fitting end to this saga led by Donnie Yen.
